چکیده

Favourable results have been obtained in the treatment of persistent joint effusion with radioactive agents (e.g. Ansell, Crook, Mallard, and Bywaters, 1963; Virkkunen, Krusius, and Heiskanen, 1967; Delbarre, Cayla, Roucayrol, Menkes, Aignan, and Ingrand, 1970; Oka, Rekonen, Ruotsi, and Seppalii, 1971). The future of this kind of radiotherapy is largely dependent on whether the ionizing radiation has side-effects. Chromosome damage in patients who had received intra-articular injections of radioactive gold ('98Au) has recently been reported (Stevenson, Bedford, Hill, and Hill, 1971a). At present radioactive yttrium (90Y) is displacing 19"Au as an agent for radiation synovectomy. In radiophysical characteristics 90Y is clearly superior to '98Au. It emits only beta-rays with a high maximum energy (2.25 MeV) and a maximum range in the tissue of 11 mm. (average 4 mm.). The corresponding figures for 198Au indicate that it is much less effective. The two isotopes have the same half-life, 2-7 days.

Acute knee joint rupture after yttrium 90 injection.

Two cases of acute rupture of the knee joint are reported after the intra-articular injection of radioactive yttrium 90. It is suggested that this may be a complication of intra-articular radioactive injections.

Radioactive yttrium in the treatment of rheumatoid knee effusions. Preliminary evaluation.

Irradiation of the synovium for the treatment of chronic knee effusions associated with rheumatoid arthritis and allied conditions is being increasingly used as an alternative to surgical synovectomy. Intraarticular injections of a colloidal solution of radioactive gold (19"8Au) has been tried with some success (Ansell, Crook, Mallard, and Bywaters, 1963; Virkkunen, Krusius, and Heiskanen, 1967...

Evaluation of two regimens to immobilise the knee after injections of yttrium-90.

Two regimens to immobilise the knee after injection were compared in patients receiving intra-articular yttrium-90 for persistent synovitis of the knee, the patients being randomly allocated to receive either complete bed rest or full mobilisation with the affected knee in a firm splint. There was no difference in the percentage of the radioisotope retained in the knee or in that taken up by ot...

Treatment of Staphylococcal Joint Infection in the Rabbit by Administration of Systemic Antibiotics and Intra-articular Corticosteroids

Background/objective: Despite the present routine treatment of septic arthritis with antibacterial agents, articular damage is persistent and frequently leads to loss of joint function.  The aim of this study was to assess the effect of intra-articular corticosteroids added to systemic antibiotics in the treatment of experimental staphylococcal knee joint infection in rabbits. Methods: Thirty r...

Histological assessment of intera articular injection of 90Y- hydroxyapatite radiocolloid in enrofloxacin induced rheumatoid arthritis in rat models   Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most common and disabling diseases in societies that causes chronic synovial inflammation and joint damages. Several pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatments of RA have been developed...
